And I’m out — Leaving my job to start freelancing full-time

It’s Independence Day in India today and I truly feel free. I am finally moving out of my job and focusing on freelancing for the next 3 months. But why does it feel like freedom?

I come from a family where people follow this template: study hard, get a job, work hard, and retire with a decent corpus.

I don’t know how to do anything else to make money. Sure I have freelanced for a long time but I have always been a “hobby freelancer”. You know what I mean, right? Make extra money on the side that can be used to pay for things I want or like. Or sometimes put aside in Mutual Funds.

But to build a business is an entirely different ball game altogether.

In a job, all I focused on was being good and working so hard that nobody could ever beat me. And that’s the end of it. No external variables, no other major risks, and no asking people for work or money. I also got comfortable with the salary that was coming in.

I have always wanted to have a business but never really dared to do it. Slowly as I rose through the ranks, it started becoming even more impossible. With every salary hike, you feel you will never match your…
